Two men were boiled alive after a sinkhole of scalding hot water opened up underneath them while they were in a car.

The men reportedly died 'almost instantly' after the car they were in plunged into the sinkhole in Penza, Russia.

The two men have not been named, but tributes have already been rushing in as the news was broken online.

Horrific images taken shortly after the incident occurred show the men's bodies being lifted from the water by a crane, while the Lada Largus car is off to one side.

According to local media the water was 75C degrees and is believed to have come from a hot water pipe that burst under the car park and caused the sink hole to open.

In Russia, hot water is piped to buildings underground during the severe and bitterly cold winters.

One eyewitness said: "What a horrendous way to die - one moment you are driving a car, the next underground drowning in hot water."

The local Ministry of Emergencies said: "A car fell as a result of the ground collapsing.

"Sadly, people were killed."

A reporter who attended the scene, said: "Another car drove over the same spot minutes before the accident.

"The driver noticed ground beginning to steam - and quickly drove off.

"Then these two men came.

"They parked - and the asphalt collapsed right under them."

Senior officials also attended the site of the tragic incident - but that hasn't stopped angry residents from slamming the local authorities on social media.

Last year a horrifying video was shared online showing a woman disappearing into a huge sinkhole that suddenly opened up underneath her as she walked along the street.

The woman was walking through Lanzhou in China when the nine-square-metre hole suddenly opened up and she plummeted in.

Shocked onlookers saw the woman fall and could hear shouting for help and she lay in the hole covered in rubble.

Miraculously, despite the fall, the woman was found to have only sustained two broken ribs in the fall.
