Year five pupils got more than they bargained for when the school's content filter failed during a special assembly

There are few things in school life that rivalled the feeling of pure ecstasy that enveloped the classroom when you found out you were going to be watching a film instead of doing any work. Here in 2018, this tradition is alive and well but with a few key differences.

First of all, the old-fashioned TV on wheels has been replaced by laptops and projectors. Secondly, there is now a genuine risk of unwittingly catching a glimpse of some X-rated material.

That's exactly what happened at a school in Walsall, when a raunchy pop-up interrupted a class screening of Paddington.

Parents were left outraged after their nine-year-old children were exposed to pornography because of a problem with the school's content filtration system.

The year-five kids were supposed to be watching a Paddington film during a special assembly, but were instead faced with images that left some of them 'traumatised'.

A letter to parents said: "During Year 5's Golden Time today, whilst watching Paddington Bear we had a failure in our filters. An inappropriate image came up.

"The school has strict measures in place to prevent such images from appearing."

However, parents are furious at the school's lack of immediate action, with some arguing that they should have been notified by text message as soon as the problem had occurred.

One such parent, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Metro: "I was absolutely disgusted to hear it from my child's mouth, to know he has been shown this.

"You do not expect to have it in a school; you try your best to prevent it at home. Some children take it with a pinch of salt but other kids are traumatised. We were all disgusted considering the children had to tell us.

'NO SCHOOL FOR MY KIDS' - WHAT IS UNSCHOOLING?

"Parents are annoyed that we were made aware by giving a letter to the Year Five students, who can read, so it is not only wrong to see it but they have to repeat it. We asked a member of staff if they had even watched the film beforehand and they had not."

According to parents, the school has not yet apologised. A spokesman from the school said: "An issue with web content filtering software occurred on Friday afternoon.

"The issue has been reported to the Trust, the Local Authority Designated Officer and the service provider, in accordance with academy procedures. An investigation is under way and to comment any further would be inappropriate at this point."
