The family of a young mum have spoken out after she was viciously killed by her boyfriend just months after they started a relationship via online dating site, Plenty Of Fish.

Katherine Smith, 26, was stabbed 33 times at her flat in Ely, Cardiff, by 'suspicious' Anthony Lowe, 46, who lied to her about his name and age.

Lowe was jailed for life with a minimum term of 18 years after the 'deliberate, sustained and brutal' attack.

Katherine's relatives have told a court of the 'unbearable' pain they felt when telling her little girl that she would never see her mother again.

In a victim impact statement read by prosecutor Michael Jones QC, Katherine's mum told the court: "Katherine was beautiful, intelligent and caring. Even during her short life people told us how lovely a person she was.

"We will never see her smile again. Our hearts are broken and nothing in this life will ever mend that.

"Parents should not bury their children and they should never have to be told their child has been killed at the hands of another person.

"The pain and hurt was unbearable.

"She was 26 years old. The pain of telling my granddaughter that she would not see her mummy any more was unbearable.

"I cannot begin to tell you the sorrow we are going through. Katherine may have been 26 years old but she was my baby girl.

"Since Katherine has been killed, I cry when I am on my own. I try to be strong for my family.

"I know they're all hurting. All I want to do is take their hurt and pain away and turn the clock back so my daughter is still alive.

"We are all devastated she had been taken from us in such a cruel, horrific way.

"Anthony Lowe you have not just taken one life, you have taken my life, as I do not live now, I just exist.

"I always thought that monsters were just in movies, but now I know that monsters are real."

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Lowe was 'suspicious' and did not trust his partner, sending her persistent messages to 'check up on her'.

On 27 September last year, the couple went to Tongwynlais Rugby Club in Cardiff,to play skittles with family and friends before Katherine was ferociously attacked.

Lowe appeared to be in a 'bad mood' and did not speak to Katherine in the car on the way home.

They were seen on CCTV arriving at her flat, where she was murdered, and Lowe left just 20 minutes later, and went on the run.

He was arrested in Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, outside a Tesco supermarket, Wales Online reports.

He pleaded guilty to her murder at the start of his trial and was jailed for life with a minimum term of 18 years.

A pathologist found Katherine had 33 stab wounds, including to the neck, chest and heart.

The defendant told Katherine he was called Tony Moore, leading her to get a tattoo of his fake initials.

Prosecutors said the pair met on the Plenty Of Fish dating site and started a relationship last summer.
