A heroic van driver helped police in America catch a fleeing suspect on Friday night by purposely crashing head-on into the suspect's vehicle, leading to his arrest.

Police in Ferndale, Michigan were in pursuit of a vehicle being driven by a man who was wanted on a string of traffic warrants.

The driver and a passenger sped away to avoid the chasing officers, reaching speeds of up to 80 miles per hour and mounting pavements in the process - as captured in the video below:

The dramatic footage follows the high-speed chase as the suspect in the black car is stopped in his tracks by a van driver, who spotted him trying to evade police and decided to deliberately crash into him to help.

The driver of the black car had attempted to turn into a shopping centre car park, where he was stopped dead in his tracks by the van, which smashed into the side of the car.

The video, shot from the dashboard-mounted camera of the pursuing Ferndale police car, ends with cops leaping out of squad cars, with guns drawn, to yank the fleeing motorist onto the pavement.

The crash successfully stopped the suspect's car, with the van positioned against the suspect's driver-side door to prevent him from escaping.

This allowed the officers giving chase enough time to jump out, drag the suspect from his car, wrestle him to the ground and get him under control.

Police can be heard shouting: "Get your hands up and stay there," before dragging a man from the black vehicle and onto the floor.

With police sirens blaring, three officers hold him to the ground in a struggle, while shouting: "Get your hands behind your back".

Police took the suspect and the passenger into custody, and recovered a stolen handgun with a 30-round magazine and several wraps of heroin from the vehicle. The seized gun had been reported stolen in Detroit.

According to Fox 2, the suspect was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of narcotics, third-degree fleeing and eluding, and driving with a suspended licence.
