The Vatican ha launched an investigation into reports that the Pope's Instagram account 'liked' a raunchy photo posted by a model, the Catholic News Agency reports.

Earlier this week, Brazilian model Natalia Garibotto claimed the leader of the Catholic Church had taken a shine to a snap of her wearing a very tiny schoolgirl outfit.

She later posted a short video to her account appearing to show the like on her picture from the Pope's account.

Joking about it on Twitter, she said: "At least I'm going to heaven."

However, it appears as though the video has since been removed by Garibotto - perhaps at the request of the Vatican?

Speaking to Barstool Sports at the time, she said: "My mum may hate my ass pics but the Pope be double-tapping."

The picture of Natalia Garibotto liked by the Pope's Instagram account.

The post was quickly unliked and the official press office for the Holy See has declined to comment at the time.

However, according to the Catholic News Agency, the Pope's social media channels are controlled by a team of employees and an internal investigation has been launched into the matter.

LADbible has contacted the Holy See for a comment.

The Pope is generally thought to be pretty progressive compared to his predecessors, particularly as the first pontiff to publicly support the LGBT community.

In a documentary entitled Francesco, the 83-year-old said: "Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it.

"What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered."

An investigation has reportedly been launched into activity on the Pope's Instagram account.

Francesco had its premiere at Rome Film Festival last month and this comment represents his most direct endorsement of same-sex civil unions to date.

Reverend James Martin - a prominent Jesuit who has long advocated for the church to be more welcoming to LGBT members - said this was a move in the right direction.

Speaking to The Washington Post, he said: "I think it's a big step forward. In the past, even civil unions were frowned upon in many quarters of the church. He is putting his weight behind legal recognition of same-sex civil unions."

He had also previously spoken to a victim of sexual abuse in what was to that point his clearest indication of his acceptance of homosexuality.

The Pontiff said God had made Juan Carlos Cruz gay and that his sexuality 'does not matter'.

Cruz was speaking privately with the Pope last week about his abuse at the hands of a high-up priest in Chile.

When the two reached the subject of Cruz's sexuality, Pope Francis is reported as having said: "Juan Carlos, that you are gay does not matter. God made you like that and loves you like this and I don't care. The Pope loves you like this. You have to be happy with who you are."
