Victorians will be allowed to welcome up to five people to their homes after the Premier announced social distancing rules to be slightly eased amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Premier Daniel Andrews says the people you invite should only be friends and family.

The measure will take effect from 11:59pm tomorrow.

There's no limit on how far people can travel to go to someone's home however you're not permitted to stay overnight.

Mr Andrews says this is a 'safe' and 'cautious' step towards relaxing other rules, however they won't hesitate to tighten the law if the number of coronavirus cases increase.

The rules will be reassessed over the coming weeks and the state will look at potentially opening things like cafes and restaurants when the data shows it is safe to do so.

He added that training for NRL and AFL teams will be allowed to resume under a set of restrictions.
