A Reddit user has given people an early Halloween fright after posting a video showing a secret room in their house that they hadn't previously known about - despite living there for five years.

You'd think it would've come up on the survey, but apparently the Reddit user had no idea that the room existed at all.

When you actually see how they found it, things might become a little clearer.

The video shows the person discovering that two bricks in a grey stone wall of their dining room can be removed to uncover a gold turning lock. Real Scooby-Doo stuff.

A door and hinges that are perfectly disguised against the rest of the wall can then be opened to reveal a room small room which in reality isn't much bigger than the the size of a cupboard.

The surprised resident posted the video on Reddit with the caption: "Been living in this house for five years, never noticed there was a secret door leading to a little storage cubby behind the dining room finish."

This being Reddit, and also with Halloween season upon us, people were of course quick to wildly get over-excited about spooky the room was.

Some users compared it to something from a 'nightmare', with one saying: "Imagine opening it up and finding signs that someone has been living there a long time."

That would indeed be terrifying.

Another person commented: "That's some Parasite s*** right there," while a third wrote: "Sweet murder room bro! What a find."

Seeking to calm everyone's nerves, the original poster replied to one user: "Kinda creepy but no dead bodies at least."

Well, at least there's an up side.

They then went on to say what they actually found in the room: "I should've brought a flashlight when I recorded but there was really nothing interesting I can find.

"Just a broom & dustpan, a 1/3 bag of concrete, some wood boards, those little indoor fence things and spare blinds."

Not so scary after all then.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, people were forthcoming in suggestions as to how to utilise the room, with one saying "1: Don't tell anyone else in the house. 2: Hide in room. 3: Scream."

Now that definitely sounds like something they should do on 31 October.
