Andrei Karlov, Russia's ambassador to Turkey, has been killed after being shot by a policeman at an art exhibition in Ankara.

Reuters reports that Karlov was escorted away for treatment after sustaining injuries as he prepared to make a speech ahead of the 'Russia in the eyes of Turks' exhibition opening.

Karlov later died of his injuries and the mayor of Ankara has since identified the attacker as a Turkish policeman.

It follows the recent uprising of protests criticising Russia's part in the ongoing Syrian conflict.

The gunman allegedly yelled 'we die in Aleppo, you die here!' during the attack.

Spectators said the gunman warned everyone to 'Get out!' before unleashing several shots.
