A 76-year-old woman, who says she was randomly attacked in broad daylight this week, sent a man to hospital after beating him with a stick.

Xiao Zhen Xie, from San Francisco, says she was waiting to cross the street on Wednesday (17 March), when a 39-year-old man allegedly punched her in her face.

Speaking to local news station KPIX 5, the elderly woman, who suffered bruising to her eyes, said she grabbed a nearby stick and used it to defend herself, striking the assailant.

As a result of her actions, the man was later placed on a stretcher and taken to hospital for treatment.

When asked how she felt, Ms Xie told the channel: "Very traumatised, very scared and this eye is still bleeding.

"The right eye still cannot see anything and [is] still bleeding, and we have something to absorb the bleeding."

Ms Xie's grandson John Chen also added: "As you can see she is extremely terrified. She's terrified to even step out."

The aftermath of the altercation was caught on camera by KPIX Sports Director Dennis O'Donnell, who was out for his morning run.

He said: "The woman said that she was hit. She attacked back. From what I could see, she wanted more of the guy on the stretcher and the police were holding her back."

In his video, which was posted to Twitter, a very distressed Ms Xie can be heard shouting at the alleged attack, who is being taken away on a stretcher.

She says: "You bum, why did you bully me? He hit me, he hit me!"

Police confirmed that a 39-year-old man was being investigated in relation to this incident as well as another attack on an 83-year-old Asian man on the same day.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said: "We have to do our job and we have to investigate these cases with all resources brought to bear and we need to make arrests, and we've done that."

Mr Chen has since set up a GoFundMe for his grandmother.

The page has already exceeded its $50,000 target, having so far raised an incredible $148,859.

The description reads: "I am amazed by her bravery. She was the one that defended herself from this unprovoked attack.

"But she is now suffering two serious black eyes and one that is bleeding unstoppably. Her wrist has also swelled up.

"She has been severely affected mentally, physically, and emotionally. She also stated that she is afraid to step out of her home from now on.

"The funds that we receive will be used to cover her medical expenses, her therapy treatment, and her bills that we will have to pay constantly from now on."
