A woman claims that a man openly masturbated while sat next to her on a flight.

Elly Shariat tweeted to Southwest Airlines to tell them that a man was watching porn on his iPad, without headphones and that she had seen him twice start 'shaking in the throes of his orgasmic bliss'.

She added that it had been a 'nearly five-hour assault' on all her senses.

She says the man passed over his 'filled napkins' to the flight attended and that the was 'no way' staff working on the flight hadn't seen what he was up to.

Responding to her tweet, Southwest told her to 'reach out' to one of the flight attendents to tell them what was going on.

However, Shariat says she did not feel safe doing this, replying: "There's literally no way to do that without putting myself at risk. He's in the window seat. I'm in the middle. And there's someone dead asleep to my left. I can't move. Which is why I purchased WiFi to tweet you."

In a follow-up tweet, she said: "FYI as the jerk got off the flight, he waited with me, and as the plane emptied, he looked at me, told me he hoped I enjoyed the show, patted my head, and then left."

In a statement to the HuffPostPost a spokesperson from Southwest said: "We are deeply disturbed by the behavior described by Ms. Shariat, and we have contacted her to address her concerns and offer our apologies.

"Our internal reports indicate that the crew did not witness this incident during the flight - and it was not until the plane landed that they were made aware of the situation. Our crew then apologised to Ms. Shariat and assured her that they were not previously aware of the situation. This type of behavior on a flight would never be tolerated by any of our employees."

Speaking to TMZ, Shariat says she was initially only offered a 'dinner voucher' after she complained about her experience.

Once off the plane, Shariat filed a report with police - which is now reportedly being investigated by the FBI, according to HuffPost.
