A woman was stunned when she discovered that her ex-boyfriend who she was told had died was working in a restaurant she visited.

The girlfriend, called Rachel, and boyfriend, who won't be named for legal reasons, were 18 and 21 respectively when they started dating.

A few months into their relationship, he returned home from a night out with a broken hand which prevented him from working as a chef in a local pub. He asked Rachel to borrow him $1,000 AUD (£530/$680 USD) to make ends meet.

Some time later, the pair split and she was given $300 (£159/$204 USD) back before her now ex-boyfriend went off the radar.

Initially, she was told that he'd gone to rehab but then claimed that friends calculated that the boyfriend owed more than $2,300 (£1,200/$1,500 USD) to both his ex-girlfriend and friends.

Rachel then received news from a mutual friend that her ex had died, according to MailOnline. She explained: "It sounds stupid in retrospect, but you don't have any reason to question it. If I called you and told you my mum I'd died, you wouldn't be like, 'give me a death certificate'."

The man's mum had explained to people that her son was murdered because he was in debt to a bike gang.

Then two years after finding out about the 'death', Rachel and her friend went to a restaurant where her ex-boyfriend's brother worked.

She asked the waitress whether he was working and she responded: "No, but his brother is," going on to say the name of Rachel's old boyfriend. She said she 'just went into shock'.

Naturally (I'd imagine) Rachel asked whether she could see her ex before a manager appeared at their table and told the friends to leave the venue.

Rachel phoned the police, hoping to get the outstanding loan she was owed but she claims that officers told her it was 'her word against his' that she ever gave him the cash in the first place.

She then received a message from her ex-boyfriend's mum about creating a 'scene' at the restaurant which resulted in the man losing his job.

That wasn't the last time the former flames had a run in, some years later she saw him working in a different eatery, explaining: "We made eye contact, and you could see he recognised me. I was like 'Long time no see!' And he went, 'Oh yeah, it has been a long time'."

Rachel quizzed him about the money she claims to be owed and said that he suggested he didn't recognise her and denied everything, leaving quickly.
