Woman Leaves BBQ 'Shocked' And Hungry After Friend Charges Her To Attend

A woman was stunned when she was invited to a barbeque by a ‘distant friend’, only to leave without eating the food she'd paid for

A woman was shocked to leave a barbeque feeling 'hungry' despite paying to be there - admitting she and her partner ended up getting a takeaway on the way home.

With barbeque season finally upon us, many of us are excited to fire up the coals and treat our friends and family to a round of burgers, sausages and more, maybe even a glass or two of Pimm's if you're feeling particularly hospitable.

Even a burnt chicken drumstick tastes great when the sun's out and you've got a lager in your hand.

But one woman was stunned when she was invited to a barbeque by a 'distant friend', who charged her six guests £40 each for the honour.

Amazingly, this didn't even include booze, just meat, veg, desserts and soft drinks - not that they even got to eat it.

Writing on Mumsnet, she explained: "A distant friend arranged a barbecue. She invited 6 people and asked for £40 each. This was to go towards meat, veg and dessert and soft drinks (no alcohol).

"Got there on day and husband and her had issues lighting the fire and then got really grumpy.

"We all tried to help her as she was getting moody and sulking and she stressed she didn't want help (we all helped marinade the meat before).

"She eventually made a few batches of wings and corn and then started sulking and went inside.

"Her husband followed her in with the rest of us sitting confused to how we can help her. 20 minutes later her husband came down and said it's best if we all leave as she isn't feeling well.

"We all went hungry. DH [Darling Husband] and I got takeout on way home (we paid £80! For the BBQ). I'm still shocked at the outcome of the day."

Later in the thread, she added: "We only went as a close friend is close friends with her. She invited us and we thought it'd be nice to do something different.

"Not to mention all the meat veg desserts and drinks left at her house! We were all so shocked we hurriedly left."

Naturally, other Mumsnet users were horrified by the story, with one commenting: "They have a b****y cheek to charge in the first place!

"Asking people to bring drinks/desert/meat is one thing, but charging as though it's a commercial event is quite another."

Another said: "I find it genuinely bizarre that anyone would ask for money for a BBQ or any sort of event at their house that they invite you to. If you don't want to pay for other people's food then organise a dinner out or a picnic. Don't host."

A third recalled a similar situation, saying: "We had 'friends' that would host a BBQ and would tell you what they needed. They would provide the salad, dips and some chicken. The rest of us would buy all the meat, cheese, baps, fingers rolls, coleslaw, etc.

"Anything left over would go in their freezer to feed them for the week. I thought this was bad but your experience is worse. I would definitely be wanting a refund."
