When you're heading out for work, chances are you're juggling your briefcase/backpack/handbag as well as a jacket, maybe some papers, a coffee and your phone.

You're a busy person, it's understandable.

But God forbid you try and get into your car and sip on that coffee in Australia otherwise you could be courting a hefty penalty.

That's what one woman alleges happened as she was driving through Newcastle, New South Wales this week.

The woman says she was pulled over by a police officer and threatened with a $495 fine and three points because she was drinking from her coffee cup.

Speaking to the Newcastle Herald, the woman said: "He started telling me that it was unsafe to be drinking coffee while I was driving.

"He was telling me that I should be concentrating on driving and that he could give me a $495 fine and take three points from my licence.

"I had no idea I was doing anything wrong. Then he said if I wanted to drink the coffee, I should pull over and have a drink, not just takes sips as I drive along."

According to the Daily Mail, there's no federal, state or territory law that disallows someone from eating or drinking non-alcoholic beverages while driving, so it's unclear where this cop got this rule.

Imagine copping a fine that hefty for doing what tons of road users do everyday.

What about the driver who was fined more than £2,000 for flicking a cigarette butt out of his car?

Gary Jones, 30, was given the shocking bill after he ignored an initial £80 fine.

The fine, which was given to him by Plymouth's 'litter cops', was then escalated to the City magistrates, who increased it to £300 - he was then ordered to pay £1,665 in court costs after skipping two court hearings.

Plymouth City Council took the case to court, saying that it should give a strong message that littering of any kind will not be ignored.

Plymouth city councillor Sally Haydon told PlymouthLive: "Littering is an ongoing problem in Plymouth and we want people to realise that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable.

"People should not be throwing cigarettes and food wrappers from their cars."

While that could have easily been avoided had they paid the fine, just be wary that things can escalate considerably if you're not careful. Don't say you haven't been warned.
