A woman who gouged out her own eyes while on drugs has been given a pair of prosthetic eyeballs.

Two years ago, Kaylee Muthart, from South Carolina, tore out her eyes in the midst of a methamphetamine-induced psychosis and had to be restrained by a stranger.

Just 21 at the time, she was rushed to hospital where doctors gave her the devastating news that she would be blind for the rest of her life.

But Kaylee, now clean and healthy, has received her first pair of prosthetic eyes during a procedure at Gorrin's Clinic on 5 August.

Kaylee, who is enrolled in a blind school, said that she was over the moon with her new set of eyes.

The 22-year-old said: "I was so excited to get them. I just wanted to appear more normal to the outside world."

Kaylee recently had a new pair of prosthetic eyes fitted.

Her boyfriend Alex, 42, who she has been dating since January, was there to witness the incredible moment with Kaylee.

He said: "It melted my heart. She was never any different to me, but I know she's wanted this for a very long time and I'm so happy she has this now.

"I felt so much joy, love, appreciation and thanks to God.

"Seeing Kaylee happy makes me happy."

He added: "She is always an upbeat and positive person, but this made her extra happy.

"It was incredible to be able to look in her eyes."

Kaylee pulled her eyes out while high on drugs.

Kaylee explained: "I said, 'I feel like I'm Kaylee again,' and Alex said, 'You've always been Kaylee to me.'

"He cried when he saw me."

Following the procedure, Kaylee FaceTimed her mum, Katy Tompkins, 58, to show her what she looked like.

Kaylee said: "She cried with happiness too.

"She is so excited for me and this next chapter in my life."

To celebrate her new eyes, Kaylee and Alex went for dinner at Applebees.

"That's where we has our first date, so it's a meaningful place for us," Kaylee said.

The 22-year-old says she finally feels like herself again.

"Before we had dinner I put on my own makeup for the first time since I lost my sight, that felt very special."

Kaylee, who has started writing a book about her experience, will soon receive a guide dog to assist her in her daily life.

She said: "I've learned a decent amount of braille and I can cook, use a stove, wash clothes, make the bed and look after pets now.

"I'm planning to go back to school to get my high school diploma, and then an associates degree. I want to get up as high as I can.

"I've come such a long way from two years ago.

"Coming off meth was awful, physically and mentally, there was hallucinations and psychosis, but I overcame it thanks to God."
