Supermarkets across Australia have been coming up with ways to ensure everyone can get their groceries amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite rules being introduced to prevent stockpiling, some aisles have still been cleared out.

But Woolworths has introduced a care package that you can buy if you're an elderly or disabled person, someone with a compromised immunity or someone in mandatory isolation who can't get to the shops.

The Basics Box will set you back $80 and comes packed with everything you would need while in self-isolation.

Inside the box, you can get:

  • Essentials: flour, sugar, toilet paper, soap (or other hygiene products)
  • Breakfast: longlife milk (or a dairy substitute), fruit juice, Weetbix, oats (or breakfast cereal), crackers (or similar), and a spread (jam, vegemite, honey or peanut butter)
  • Lunch & Dinner: pasta (or rice, lentils, noodles, quinoa, couscous), pasta sauce (or similar), canned tuna (or other canned meat), canned items - soup, vegetables & fruit, baked beans (or similar), and tortilla bread (or similar)
  • Snacks: tea, biscuits (or chocolate wafers, sweet snacks), and muesli bars (or dried fruits).

Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci said: "We understand many of our older or more vulnerable customers will be anxious about their food and grocery needs in the weeks ahead.

"Going to the supermarket is a key part of everyday life for many of them, and some will have never even considered ordering groceries online before.

"We're working at pace to reshape our business, and thanks to the support of the likes of Australia Post and DHL, we will be able to better service those in self-isolation."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he wanted people over the age of 70 to remain indoors to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Mr Morrison said: "This does not mean that they cannot go outside - they can go outside for the purpose of recreation, getting fresh air, with a support person.

"It is advice that we are putting in place for their own protection.

"It is not the medical advice that older Australians will be acting as carriers of the disease. This is being put in place for them."

The Woolworths Basics Box will be available in New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT this week. It will eventually be available nationwide once delivery and supply systems are worked out in other states and territories.

You'll only be allowed to purchase two boxes per person, per fortnight.

Hopefully this allows these Aussies to get access to groceries without putting themselves at risk.
