For some unknown reason, online retailers have begun to sell the items, describing them as 'unique gifts for women'. Steady on.

The covers come in all kinds of designs, but you can mainly expect some floral patterns, a few beads, and a LOT of chiffon.

You might want to be careful if you've got a tumble dryer built in - all that flammable material looks like a horrible accident waiting to happen.

And, reasonably, people haven't known quite what to make of them.

One Twitter user said: "Aww, I love seeing washing machines in their wee confirmation dresses."
