People Now Saying That Elf Is The ‘Most Overrated Christmas Film’ Ever

People Now Saying That Elf Is The ‘Most Overrated Christmas Film’ Ever

Elf is being dubbed by many on social media as being 'overrated'

Despite being considered a 'classic' by some since its release in 2003, many are now dubbing Elf as being 'the most overrated Christmas film' ever.

For those unaware, the movie is about a character named Buddy (Will Ferrell), who is raised by elves at the North Pole.

After discovering that he is not actually an elf, he travels to New York to search for his biological father, played by James Caan.

The star studded line up includes Bob Newhart (Papa Elf), Mary Steenburgen (Emily) and Peter Dinklage (Miles Finch), while Jon Favreau plays Dr. Leonardo whilst also directing.

Even though it's got a pretty solid rating of 7 on IMDb, recent tweets suggest that, some 18 years since its debut, people aren't buying into the hype.

One user wrote: "Elf is the most overrated movie of all time zzzz."

A second added: "I kinda love the really warm Christmas movies like Muppets CC and Miracle on 34th (Elizabeth Perkins helps ), but a Christmas never passes where I don't find time for at least 3 viewings of Die Hard haha. I find Elf soooo overrated but I must be missing something lol."

Another said: "Elf is the most overrated Christmas movie I’ve ever seen."

A fourth wrote: "Yearly reminder that Elf is one of the most wildly overrated movies of all time."

Someone else added: "Unpopular opinion. Watched Elf last night, the whole way through.

"Not done that for a few years. My reaction? It's overrated. It's not a bad film, it just doesn't come anywhere near Muppets, Home Alone or National Lampoon's.

"And I love Will Ferrell so don't throw that at me."

A final user concludes: "Just watched Elf again and yep, still overrated.

"Sorry not sorry."

It must be said that many were not referring to Elf as being 'a bad film', more so that it isn't as good as it's made out to be.

Although, it goes without saying - what might be 'overrated' to some, will, of course, be amazing for others.

Either way, Elf was a smash hit and grossed a worldwide total of $220 million (£166 million) at the box office, against a minor production budget of $33 million (£24.9 million).
