The Prime Minister of Turkey, Binalo Yildirim, has said a military coup is currently under way in Ankara, NTV reports.

Yildirim has described it as an "illegal attempt" to gain power via military action.

He added that Turkey would refuse any "initiative that would interrupt democracy," and those responsible will "pay the highest price."

A Reuters witness said gunfire was heard in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, on Friday as well saying military helicopters and jets were seen circling overhead.

The witnesses also said the helicopters were seen in Istanbul. NTV reports that both bridges across the Bosphhorus have been closed to traffic.

It's not known whether the two occurrences are related.
