A hung parliament has officially been declared at the General Election, with the Conservatives as the biggest party.

Sky News currently projects that the Conservatives will remain the largest party on 315 to 321 seats - with 326 required for a majority.

Labour are projected to win between 260 and 266 seats - more than at any election since 2005.

When no single party can get enough MPs to form a majority on its own, the parliament is said to be 'hung'.

In the event of a hung parliament, the Conservative government will remain in office until it is decided who will attempt to form a new government, or unless May decides to resign.

In all likelihood, the Conservatives will strike a deal with Northern Ireland's DUP, however they will be left with a very slim majority to pass legislation.

But the result will lead to huge uncertainty over Brexit negotiations, which are set to begin in just a week's time, especially if talks are still ongoing as to which party will form a government.

It has been speculated that Theresa May could resign as Prime Minister, having called the election with the aim of winning a significant majority. If she does stand down, this will trigger a big leadership battle.

In his constituency victory speech overnight, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it was 'time for Theresa May to go' and make way for 'a government that was truly representative'.

He added that she had 'lost seats, lost votes, lost confidence', and said with regards to May: "That's enough for her to go, frankly."
