Shocked Viewers Notice Lyrics Have Been Changed In The Gavin And Stacey Christmas Special

Fans are divided after Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special opts to remove homophobic slur from song

Viewers of Gavin and Stacey have been left divided after the show recently opted to change the homophobic lyrics from the famous Christmas song, 'Fairytale of New York' that was sang in the 2019 Christmas Special episode.

The Pogue's lyrics 'scumbag and f****t' were removed from their 1987 Christmas hit after causing controversy in recent times and viewers noticed the change in the recent airing of the show.

Uncle Bryn - played by Rob Brydon - sings the song in one scene during the Christmas special but in this year's airing, his singing of the controversial lyrics were not-so discreetly replaced with different lyrics.

As per usual on social media, some were in favour of the change and some were not.

One unhappy user wrote: "I can’t believe they changed the Gavin and Stacey Xmas special with a mumble."

Another added: "As if @BBC have just changed the best moment on Gavin and Stacey.

"What a load of snowflakes in this world. Absolutely shocking.

"It's a song FFS."

A third tweeted: "Just watching the re run of Gavin And Stacey Christmas special.

"When first aired 2 years ago they had the proper lyrics singing Fairytale Of New York……needless to say they’ve changed the lyric. F**king Pathetic."

Someone else wrote: "Experienced my first Fairy Tale of New York discourse at work today, boss said 'they did it on Gavin and Stacey but they changed it this year because you're not allowed to say f----- these days' - maybe don't f**king say it then Andrea!?"

Despite the negative backlash following the change, many were initially upset with the lyrics.

One person wrote: "Can't believe we almost made it an entire Christmas without the 'Fairytale of New York' 'f****t' discourse and then Gavin & Stacey just... went there."

Another said: "'Fairytale of New York' was released in 1987, the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special was broadcast in 2019.

"Scripts are drafted & redrafted - 'f****t' making it into a highly anticipated television episode on Christmas day was a conscious decision & there IS an issue with that."

At the time, a BBC spokesperson told The Metro: "'Fairytale of New York' is a very popular, much-loved Christmas song played widely throughout the festive season, and the lyrics are well-established with the audience."

The synopsis for the Xmas special reads: "The families get together once again for Christmas.

"Bryn is cooking dinner, Dawn is in shock, and there are revelations in the pub on Christmas Eve."
