Accountant Scott Foster thought it was just going to be another night when he attended the United Centre to watch the Chicago Blackhawks face the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

However, the 36-year-old's wildest dreams became a reality when he was called upon as an emergency goalie in the National Hockey League game.

Not only did he get to play, but he also absolutely smashed it with a clean sheet, leading to him being named 'man of the match'. Nailed it.

The reason Foster was asked to play was because he's part of the group of amateur goaltenders who rotate as emergency cover at Blackhawks home games.

While the chance of these group members being called upon to play is very slim, Foster had his moment following a series of injuries from the players before him.

The first choice goalie Anton Forsberg was injured during the warm up, then this replacement Collin Delia suffered cramp in the third period. Next up, it was Foster.

In the final 14 minutes, the accountant entered the ring - his first competitive game since playing at university - and managed to stop all seven shots he faced, leading the Blackhawks to a 6-2 victory over the playoff-bound Winnipeg Jets.

In an interview, Foster said, ""A few hours ago I was sitting at a computer typing, now I am standing in front of you guys having finished 14 and a half minutes of NHL hockey.

"There is always a chance. You come to enough games, guys do get hurt, but you do not think it will happen to you.

"The initial shock happened when I had to dress. And then I think you just kind of black out after that."

"Tomorrow I will wake up and button up my shirt and go back to my day job. It is something I will never forget. This is a dream."

By the end of the game, the crowd of nearly 22,000 people were shouting his name. It truly is the moment every sports fan dreams of.

Now that the story has gone viral, you never know - maybe we'll be seeing Foster ditch the day job and hit the ice for good. If not, at least he's got a killer story to tell the grandkids.
