A basketball fan was seen chugging what appeared to be a can of Stella Artois lager in the background of recent sports coverage - but he got more than he bargained for when it ended up coming back up the wrong way.

The lad had been sat with his friend watching a college basketball game at Madison Square Garden, and happened to be situated immediately behind ESPN's Jay Bilas and Dan Shulman as they covered the action.

The spectator clearly clocked that he was within frame of the ESPN coverage and decided to play up to the camera a bit by downing his can of lager.

However, after taking a hefty swig and placing the can on the floor beneath him, things suddenly took a bit of a turn for the worse.

As he sat back in his seat, he let out a confident burp before nudging his friend and giggling.

But as he giggled away, the beer suddenly shot straight back up and out of his mouth, prompting him to quickly bring his hand to his face to cover up the chaos.

ESPN reporters Bilas and Shulman, meanwhile, remained completely oblivious as they continued with their coverage.

The Stella swigger then sat back in his chair, doubled over with laugher, before eventually bending over forwards and burying him head in his arm in apparent shame.

His friend doesn't seem too bothered, and simply stayed with his arms crossed as he continued watching the game.

The footage was, of course, posted on social media, where it soon went viral.

Sharing the clip, one person wrote: "My man in the purple sweatshirt trusted a burp that he shouldn't have. Oops."

They also added a sick emoji, just to stress what had happened in case anyone missed it.

Someone else wrote: "That was glorious."

Others called him a 'rookie', while another said fondly: "I remember my first tall boy."

Also posting the video, one other person said: "My man tried to power slam a beer, did not work out too well, fired off a burp and then spit some of it back up."
