Boxer Plants A Kiss On Her Opponent's Lips During Pre-Fight Stare-Down

Boxer Plants A Kiss On Her Opponent's Lips During Pre-Fight Stare-Down

Really getting into the head of her opponent

A female boxer decided to try to gain a psychological advantage over her opponent by kissing her on the mouth during a stare-down, and got a slap for her troubles.

Now, for anyone who is familiar with boxing, you'll be aware of the stare-down. It's basically an opportunity to get into the head of your opponent by standing there stony-faced, looking as hard as you can.

It's not usually a time for kissing, but on this occasion things were apparently different.

Ahead of a WBO title fight between Ewa Brodnicka and Edith Soledad Matthysse, Brodnicka crossed the line after the weigh-in by planting one right on the mouth of her opponent.

If she was trying to get into Matthysse's head, she certainly succeeded in doing so - the smaller fighter immediately slapped her in return.

Obviously, a scuffle then ensued after which both fighters had to be pulled apart by the promoter.

Initially, the promoter had simply laughed at the kiss. It stopped being funny for him relatively quickly, then.

Well, it's a bit more interesting than just staring one another down for a while, you've got to admit that.

So, what about the actual fight, then?

The kiss didn't go down well at all...

Well, Matthysse had a record of 16 wins and 10 defeats going into this one. The 39-year-old is from decent boxing stock, too. Her brothers Walter and Lucas are also professionals in the fight game.

In fact, Lucas fought against Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao last year, losing via technical knockout.

Across from her, Brodnicka is still undefeated so far in her career. That career spans 17 fights and includes the defence of her WBO world title on five successive occasions.

All 17 of her fights have taken place in Poland, with her most recent bout seeing her victorious over Mexican Janeth Perez back in May.

We don't know whether the secret to her success is that she psychs out her opponents before the fight, but it certainly can't help to attempt to get any psychological advantage that you can, right?

And that's how it turned out, incidentally. Brodnicka extended her record by winning via a split points decision. That means that while Matthysse made a decent effort, she was unable to defeat her Polish opponent and Brodnicka retained her super featherweight belt.

Imagine what would happen if Tyson Fury planted one on Deontay Wilder at the stare-down once they finally manage to get their rematch on.

Perhaps it would give him a similar advantage...
