A suspected car thief made a terrible mistake after trying to take a vehicle belonging to UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis.

Lewis found the bloke attempting to break into his car and took matters into his own hands, reportedly knocking him out before calling Houston Police.

In a post on Instagram, Lewis shared a shot of the man being escorted away by police as well as a video in which he showed deep scratch marks on his car door before saying: "Mother f***** tried to break into my s***."

He captioned the post: "Mofo pick right/wrong car to break into. HE'S OK."

He later uploaded a shot showing a slightly bruised knuckle with the word 'satisfaction' written across the top and 'He's OK' at the bottom.

Lewis told ESPN reporter Ariel Helwani he had knocked the man out before police arrived.

Posting on Twitter Helwani said: "Derrick Lewis tells me he noticed a man trying to break into his SUV this morning.

"He knocked the man out. The police then apprehended him."

According to a police report, Lewis had been returning to his car after a workout when he spotted the alleged car robber attempting to break into his vehicle with a screwdriver.

Jodi Silva, a public information officer for the Houston Police Department, told MMA Fighting: "Mr. Lewis says he went over to the suspect, struck him, placed him onto the ground until the police arrived.

"That's the nicest way to put it."

The suspect was taken to hospital to get the once over and was then booked in at the police station, where he faces a charge of criminal mischief.

Silva explained he was being charged with criminal mischief as 'our winner did not get into the vehicle'.

Meanwhile, Lewis is tipped to be the first challenger for newly crowned heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.

UFC boss Dana White has said he expects the pair to fight 'soon'. Lewis has won his last four fights and previously beat Ngannou back in 2018.

Speaking at UFC 262 earlier this month, Lewis said he disliked Ngannou because he made him 'look fat'.

The fighter joked: "He makes me look fat when I stand next to him so f*** him.

"F*** Francis. And eat some Popeyes."
