A woman has beaten a man at the PDC World Darts Championships for the first time in its history.

Fallon Sherrock came from behind to beat Ted Evetts 3-2 at the event in London last night.

The 25-year-old - who was given odds of 2,000/1 to win the tournament before the match - fell 2-1 down but managed to turn the tide on the match and stun the crowd as she defeated Evetts, who is ranked 77 in the world.

Sherrock is the fifth woman to take part in the men's PDC Championships, and the fourth since a qualification route opened up for women last year. She earned her place by winning the UK and Ireland women's qualifying event.

The move ensures that two spots out of the 96 are open to women each year.

Sherrock now goes on to face Austria's Mensur Suljovic in the second round.

Speaking after her win, she said she was proud to have left her mark on the game and to have made a positive impact on women's darts.

She said: "I am speechless. I don't know what to say. Thank you every one. I feel really happy because I have made something for women's darts.

"I can't believe it. To do that on the biggest stage, wow. I am so happy that I can continue it rather than go out.

"This is definitely one of the best moments I've had. I'm just so happy. I've just made history. I can't believe it. I've made a great achievement for women's darts."

And it didn't take long before Sherrock was trending on Twitter.

Sharing a photo of herself after the win, she wrote: "I'm buzzing !!!!!!! can't believe I've made history tonight ... done it for the girls... that was amazing!"

Fans also congratulated Sherrock on her historic victory.

One said: "Big Congratulations to Fallon Sherrock last night very deserving victory on the biggest stage in the world of darts."

A second commented: "You made history! Congratulations. Fallon Sherrock ALWAYS be the first woman to win at the #PDCWorldChampionships and what a great match it was with #SuperTed. Good luck the crowd will be right behind you for Mensur Suljović in the next round

"Brilliant win Fallon Sherrock. Great game and a great win. Making history," wrote a third.

While another added: "A great night for Womens darts with Fallon Sherrock winning in Round 1 of the World Championship. If the PDC could just get rid of the 4 women who dance around with pom poms on the stage then that would be a big improvement. No need for it."
