Spectators caught the shocking moment on camera, showing Peroni's car springing up off a tyre on the side oft he track.

A shaken Peroni can then be seen walking away from the crash site and was taken to the medical centre as a precaution.

According to Peroni's representatives, the driver appeared to be unhurt by the crash but 'will go to the hospital for more tests'.

According to reports, the shocking incident will be analysed by FIA officials, as pressure builds to make the sport safer.

Some critics have raised their concerns over so-called 'sausage kerbs' - which are similar to a narrow sleeping policeman - and whether they are appropriate ways of enforcing track limits.

It comes a week after fellow driver, Anthoine Hubert died following an horrendous crash at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa racing circuit.

The 22-year-old was involved in a collision with Ecuadorian-American driver Juan Manuel Correa at 150 miles per hour at the course's Eau Rouge corner.

It was just the second lap of the race, which was taking place just after the practice session for the Formula One race had finished.

A statement from the Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA) read: "The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) regrets to advise that a serious incident involving cars 12, 19 and 20 occurred at 17:07 on 31/08/19 as a part of the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race at Spa-Francorchamps, round 17 of the season.

"The scene was immediately attended by emergency and medical crews, and all drivers were taken to the medical centre.

"As a result of the incident, the FIA regrets to inform that the driver of car #19, Anthoine Hubert, succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at 18:35."

Following his death, people from the sporting world paid tributes to the young driver.

Taking to social media, Brit racer Lewis Hamilton wrote: "This is devastating. God rest your soul Anthoine. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family today."

Get well soon, Alex.
