Groom Discovers He's Won £10,000 Bet On His Wedding Day

Not a bad day's work, all things considered

A groom was left stunned after he realised he'd won £10,000 ($13,000) on a football bet on the day he was getting married.

Your wedding day is supposed to be the best day of your life, and it definitely was in the case of Richard Purcell.

The 57-year-old from Widnes, Cheshire, was obviously so busy getting married to his new wife Victoria that he forgot to check his coupon from last Saturday's football action.

Eventually, he looked up the scores and realised everything he'd put on had come in, and he was suddenly thousands of pounds richer.

Not bad going at all.

He'd put on his usual Betfred Goals Galore No Draw coupon, and required a whole host of teams to score in order for his bet to be successful.

Thankfully, they all did, and the story is a happy one. Not that it wouldn't have been otherwise - he still got married, after all.

The bet, in case you're interested, had matches between Scottish sides Arbroath and Ayr, Annan Athletic and Queen's Park, and English Football League matches between Burton Albion and Doncaster Rovers, AFC Wimbledon and Crewe Alexandra, Leyton Orient and Crawley Town, and Newport County and Oldham Athletic.

It wasn't until after the ceremonies and festivities died down that he finally checked his phone to discover he'd won big.

When he did, he saw ten grand sitting there staring back at him, and decided to get the drinks in.

He initially staked £25, and was waiting on a late Wimbledon equaliser followed by an even later Crewe winner to get over the finish line.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "It's fair to say I was otherwise engaged getting married, so didn't check my phone for the results until later when I saw a lovely sum of money in my account.

"I always put this kind of bet on and I've picked up bits and bobs in the past.

"I'm sure we'll put it to good use. As for a honeymoon, we've booked a nice hotel in Chester.

"I'm the luckiest man alive - and not just because of my bride."

Speaking of which, Victoria added: "It was the least we could do to get the drinks in.

"It's unbelievable - it was already a special day, and then he tells me he's won £10k, which is easily the most he's ever achieved.

"The moment Richard told me is captured on camera. My face - it's a picture! We're absolutely made up.

"We'll be having a special Christmas despite all the difficulties everyone in the country is having to deal with."

Who can argue with that? Have a good 'un.
