Lewis Hamilton Sends Formula 1 Car To Terminally Ill Child's House

Lewis Hamilton Sends Formula 1 Car To Terminally Ill Child's House

Lewis Hamilton brightened the day of a terminally ill five-year-old by sending the trophy from his recent victory in the Spanish Grand Prix - as well as a fully functioning Formula 1 car - around to the young boy's house.

Harry Shaw, a five-year-old kid from Surrey, has been battling against a rare form of bone cancer. His plight touched Hamilton, who reclaimed top spot in the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship with victory in Barcelona this weekend.

Along with the car and the trophy, Hamilton also gave Harry a pair of signed driving gloves and sent him a recorded video message to watch. He also dedicated his recent win to the youngster.

Seeing the car in the front garden of their family home was the first time Harry had been outside of the house in several weeks due to his condition.

His dad, James Shaw, told The Mirror: "I cannot describe how much it means to us all that Lewis won the race for Harry, and then dedicated it to Harry, too.

"At a tremendously difficult time in our lives, this has provided us with a big boost, and a big smile.

"Harry couldn't believe that Lewis Hamilton was talking about him, and had dedicated the race to him. He now thinks that Lewis is his absolute best friend, which, for a five-year-old boy, is amazing.

"Harry loves cars, and although he is frail, he was asking about the exhaust pipe.

While the world championship team didn't want to publicise their gesture towards Harry, his parents have decided to make it public because of their desire to raise money and awareness for their son's illness, Ewing's Sarcoma.

James and Charlotte Shaw have started a JustGiving page which has now reached £20,000. Before Hamilton dedicated the win to Harry it was at just £2,000.

As for Hamilton, he is now seven points clear of his teammate Valtteri Bottas in the standings, but their Mercedes team secured their fifth one-two finish in as many races so far this season.

Their main competitors, Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari, are already 48 points back. Hamilton recently said: "It is definitely a lot less exciting and not how F1 should be but it is not our fault that our guys are good at their jobs.
