A 72-year-old Chinese bodybuilder has managed to maintain a surprisingly youthful appearance with his impressive regime, saying his approach to fitness has helped him live a 'healthy life'.

Xinmin Yang is a bodybuilding veteran, having started out in the sport back in 1984 - one year after China hosted its first ever national bodybuilding championships, after a ban introduced in 1953 was eventually lifted.

A video of him from 2019 was recently posted on Reddit, where a user wrote: "This 70 [year] old man looks like [he's in his] 30s after 34 years [of] everyday workout."

It sparked some debate in the comments, where many people argued he didn't look like he was in his 30s, but still looked incredible for his age.

As people questioned the benefits of working out daily, someone else wrote: "The guy who's 70 looking 30 is saying exercise every day. Maybe it isn't as detrimental as you insist it is."

A third said: "Not 70. No way. Early 50s at a push. Or just an old looking 40 year old."

A fourth added: "This is so funny everyone flat out refuses to believe it, that's the point. He looks incredible for 70."

But Yang's 'incredible' appearance hasn't come easy, as he's been putting the graft in for decades.

Speaking to Chinese fitness media company Change Production back in 2018, he said: "Over the years, I have a lived a healthy life because of bodybuilding training.

"So I should be grateful for what I have achieved in bodybuilding and promote [it] so that more people are willing to participate in bodybuilding training."

In the video, he says he's doing well for a man in his 70s, as he has normal blood pressure, normal blood lipids and a bone density equivalent to a 30-year-old's.

Yang said: "The first thing my doctor said was 'you don't look a day over 60'."

As well we weightlifting, Yang also credits his diet plan for his health - often eating six-to-eight eggs for breakfast.

He continued: "For breakfast, I usually have tomatoes, cucumber, oatmeal, eggs and some chicken breast.

"I've been eating like this for almost 10 years."

These days, Yang runs bodybuilding training camps and offers private training courses.

He said: "[Chinese bodybuilding] is getting better and better not only in terms of competitions, but also expos, equipment, supplements and coaching level.

"We have more young Chinese bodybuilders getting their pro card. The younger generation of bodybuilders are the hope of Chinese bodybuilding in the future."

Yang also said he has no plans to slow down just yet, adding: "Mark my words, I will still be training at 80. Let's make it 80.

"My bodybuilding friends - see you at 80!"
