In a world first, the Matildas, the Australian womens soccer team, will be paid the same as their male counterparts, the Socceroos.

The Football Federation Australia and the Professional Footballers Association union will announce the move later today, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The Matildas will split 40 per cent of the commercial revenue made by the two teams - and, more importantly, they'll get 40 per cent of the prize money generated by the two teams.

The two teams will share the revenue along with the broadcast deal revenue and ticket sale revenue in a completely even split.

Countries have been under pressure to equal the pay for womens soccer after this year's World Cup saw female players paid far less than their male counterparts.

The total prize money pool for the women's tournament was $30 million, compared to the $400 million pool at the FIFA World Cup in Russia last year.
