Mayweather ‘Betting Mega Bucks’ To Beat McGregor

The fight is happening on Saturday in Las Vegas, as if you didn’t know

They don't call him Money for nothing. Floyd Mayweather didn't make it to the top for so long by lacking confidence, and as befitting a man who has called Las Vegas home for as long as Floyd has, he is more than a little fond of a flutter as well.

It isn't surprising, then, to hear that the Pretty Boy has weighed in heavy on himself to turn over Conor McGregor in this weekend's superfight.

He's got previous for plenty of things, and gambling is just one of them. In 2012 alone, he totalled over $4 million based on just the payouts that he posted online. Although, as you can imagine, he's somewhat shy about filling up his feed with posts of when he loses.

He recently boasted on Instagram of his huge win backing basketball star Isiah Thomas and his Boston Celtics, putting up a photo of himself on a private jet with a huge wad of cash. Subtlety has never been one of Floyd's strong points.

His fondness for a punt notwithstanding, the man also known as Money seems to have gone even further with his latest bet. According to Vegas insider RJ Bell - provider of official odds to the Associated Press and founder of online Twitter tipper @Pregame, Floyd has laid $5 million on himself to get by Conor this Saturday night in Sin City.

"BREAKING - Trusted Vegas Source: Mayweather seriously considering betting $5 MILLION on himself to beat McGregor!" - tweeted Bell late last night.

Truth is that he'll need to punt a fair amount to make any sort of gain on the fight at all.

Mayweather is currently listed at around 1/4, meaning that Floyd's five million bucks would gain him a profit of $1.25m - a pretty penny, sure, but in the context of a $100m and then some fight purse that's loose change.

Bookies are so confident that Floyd will beat Conor that some - notably McGregor's own countrymen at Paddy Power - have already paid out on him.

"We've paid out early on a Mayweather victory," they tweeted. "Because we checked, and only one of them is a boxer". Harsh.

A more interesting angle was taken in reply to RJ Bell's tweet. Fellow user @Krampy tweeted: "conspiracy theory He's gonna bet 5 mill on himself, throw the fight because the rematch is the payday and say 'but I bet on myself'".

Now that would be a nice little earner.
