The National Basketball Association (NBA) season has been suspended 'until further notice' after a player tested positive for coronavirus.

The player has not been officially named.

The league says the game suspension is aimed at ensuring no more athletes, coaches, staff or spectators come into contact with Covid-19.

In a statement, the NBA said: "The test result was reported shortly prior to the tip-off of tonight's game between the Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder and Chesapeake Energy Arena.

"At that time, tonight's game was canceled. The affected player was not in the arena.

"The NBA is suspending game play following the conclusion of tonight's schedule of games until further notice.

"The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic."

The game between the Thunder and the Jazz was moments away from starting when Thunder's head medical staffer ran onto the court to speak with the referees, according to ESPN.
