Boxer David Whittom has died aged 39, after falling into a coma ten months ago, his partner has said.
The Canadian, who once fought Hughie Fury, passed away due to a bleed on his brain, the Journal de Quebec reports.
Whittom had been in hospital since May 2017 after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage following his fight against Gary Kopas for the title of Canadian Light Heavyweight Champion.
A few hours after the fight he began to feel unwell and was taken to hospital where the haemorrhage was detected. He was operated on and placed in a medically induced coma.
The boxer had just turned 39 on 10 March.
In a heart-breaking Facebook post, his partner wrote: "With a broken heart in a million pieces, I announce to you, my friends, that my David Whittom joined the angels and my mother this afternoon.
"I miss the words. I miss the breath. I am down to see that I lost, in so short a time, my two guardian angels.
"The two people who believed in me more than anyone.
"I love you like I have never loved anyone, thanks for everything, mom and David.
"Rest in peace, my champion. You fought too long. Now, [no] more pain."
An external review into the New Brunswick Combat Sport Commission, who put on the fight, found no wrongdoing or neglect.
