The manager of former F1 champion Michael Schumacher has released a statement thanking fans for their ongoing support while he remains in care four years after sustaining a serious brain injury in a skiing accident.

The 49-year-old suffered a near fatal head injury in the French Alps in 2013 and has been left unable to speak or walk since.

Manager Sabine Kehm said that the family appreciate the 'empathy' coming from fans and their understanding that they want to keep details about his health private, the Daily Mail reports.

Schumacher's condition has been kept strictly guarded and earlier this week Kehm refused to comment when asked.

She said: "What can be said is that the family really appreciates the empathy of the fans.

"The people really do see and understand [his health situation] is not to be shared in the public eye."

Later this year, a collection of Schumacher's memorabilia from his racings days, including cars and helmets, will go on display at The Michael Schumacher Private Collection exhibition in Cologne.

Kehm said of the display: "It is to give back to fans. To celebrate Michael the racing driver."

Schumacher was on holiday with his son Mick when tragedy struck in Decmeber 2013. He fell, hitting the right side of his head on a rock, with such force his helmet split open.

He was rushed to hospital where surgeons removed blood clots from his brain, however, some had to be left behind as they were so deeply embedded.

He was stabilised and placed into a medically-induced coma, and was later brought round.

He is reported to have a team of 15 medics who help provide him with around the clock care.

Back in 2016, Kehn said: "Michael's health is not a public issue, and so we will continue to make no comment in that regard.

"Legally seen and in the longer term, every statement related to his health would diminish the extent of his intimate sphere."

Schumacher's family, wife Corinna, son Mick and daughter Gina, have refused to speak publicly about his health.
