When Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor went toe-to-toe last year in Las Vegas in front of millions of excited fans, many were just happy that the constant media attention they received and their seemingly never-ending war of words would be over.

There were months of speculation over whether the fight would even happen and when it was finally confirmed by both parties, daily news reports began of each camp's progress.

Well, strap yourself in because 2018 could see another whole round of that, as Floyd Mayweather appears to want to have another crack at the Irish athlete.

Journalist Gareth Davies, who reportedly is the man for insider information, told talkSPORT: "My soundings are that there are a lot of talks going on in the background, there are a lot of talks around people with Mayweather.

"There are a lot of talks about him potentially having an MMA fight with Conor McGregor.

"Conor McGregor had no chance in a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. People will tune in to see Mayweather get stopped by Conor McGregor and it won't affect his boxing record.

It's not as if this is the first rumour to circulate that the American boxing star was considering a rematch with McGregor. UFC President Dana White previously told ESPN: "We're talking to Floyd about doing a UFC deal. It's real. Everything is a realistic possibility. Mayweather vs. McGregor fucking happened. Anything is possible."

Fans on both sides seemed pretty excited at the prospect of Mayweather stepping into the octagon to fight the Notorious.

At first glance, Floyd sounded pretty keen, telling a social media Q&A: "They just called me not too long ago and asked me to come back. I can come right back to the UFC. If I want, I can go, I can come right back to the UFC, I can go fight in the Octagon.

"I can do a three or four fight deal in the Octagon and make a billion dollars."

But before you start saving for what would be a highly anticipated event, the 40-year-old came back and told Fight Hype that just because he could fight McGregor doesn't necessarily mean he would.

If the deal was done, it would be a far more interesting spectacle than last year's boxing match; not only because Mayweather would make a foray into the UFC, but also because it would be stretched out over three or four matches, and fans would get more bang for their buck.

However, for those people who are sick to death of hearing about the two athletes fighting each other, this news means their feeds could be filled with McGregor/Mayweather related posts for months to come.
