American middle-distance runner David Torrence has died after his body was discovered at the bottom of a swimming pool at an apartment complex in the US.

The 31-year-old had reportedly left his home in California a few weeks ago to train in Arizona. A police statement reads: "Firefighters removed the male subject from the pool and he was pronounced deceased.

"Detectives learned that there were no obvious signs of foul play."

He won silver at the World Relay Championships in 2014, however, he switched from the American to the Peruvian team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The Malibu Times says Torrence set the Peruvian record in the mile race in June with a time of three minutes, 53.21 seconds. Speaking about the race, he said: "I've been able to break some records and knock on the door for some of the South American track and field records."

Tributes from athletes and fans have been pouring in on social media.

They've described him as 'gutsy', a man who could brighten a room and a guy who was 'passionately chasing down dreams'.

He recently competed in the World Championships in London, but came away with a disappointing result. Torrence posted on Instagram how dedicated he was to his sport.

He wrote: "How do you move on from a disappointing race?

"Do you beat yourself up for a [sic] days? Push your next workouts super hard? Drown your sorrows in alcohol, food, partying? Or do you study what went wrong. Go over your preparation. Recognize your mistakes."

RIP David Torrence.
