The Philadelphia Eagles have won the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots by 41-33 after a close game twisted back in their favour in the final quarter.

Up until that point, it had looked as if the Pats would steal it late on, as they did in the AFC championship game that saw them reach the NFL final.

Philadelphia led the game until the last quarter before New England took the lead for the first time with just nine minutes to play, after Tom Brady found Rob Gronkowski in the end zone for a touchdown.

The Eagles then scored a touchdown in controversial fashion after Zach Ertz dived into the end zone and lost control of the ball. The referees agreed that he had scored the points before the ball was lost.

Tom Brady was then sacked to give away the only turnover of the game, which handed Philadelphia the chance to win the game.

The Eagles had led for most of the game after touchdowns from Corey Clement, Alshon Jeffrey, and LeGarrette Blount - a lead they took into half time - but the Pats hit back through James White, Chris Hogan and two touchdowns from Rob Gronkowski.

The Patriots were looking to win their sixth Super Bowl, equalling the record set by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Eagles had never won the Super Bowl before tonight.

The two teams can both be proud of their efforts in what proved to be a high-scoring game full of incidents, in which they combined for the highest total yardage in Super Bowl history.

The Eagles quarterback Nick Foles also made his own piece of history by becoming the first player of all time to throw and catch a touchdown in the same Super Bowl.

He caught a pass on the fourth down to score a ridiculous touchdown from a pass thrown by the Eagles tight-end Trey Burton.

Forty-year-old Tom Brady played a fantastic game, despite notably fumbling what looked like a routine catch at a pivotal moment, but it was just not enough to get his team over the line. In the end, the game went right down to the last few seconds.

The Eagles were worth their victory though and got their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the first time in the franchise's history.

They were made to work for it, however, as the game went right down to the last throw of the football. But when the time came, the Eagles had more than enough to get over the line.
