Up to 7,000 tickets remain unsold for this weekend's superfight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The fight, which is due to take place on Saturday night in Las Vegas - early morning Sunday UK time - is cited as being the most valuable of all time, having already surpassed the $72 million arena ticket sales record set by Mayweather's 2015 bout with Manny Pacquiao.

Ticket sales have been slow, however, as the minimum price for entry to the T-Mobile on the Vegas Strip is $500, going all the way up to $10,000 for the best seats in the house.

The BBC's man on the ground in Vegas, Mike Costello, claimed on Radio 5 Live that the LA Times had reported last week that 7,000 of the seats in the arena were still up for grabs.

The West Coast newspaper reported the figure of 7,000 on August 7th but admitted that the figure might be slightly inflated due to an unknown number of secondary market tickets.

More recently, the LA Times reported last night that just over a thousand seats remain unsold, a number that they expect will diminish when people begin to arrive in Vegas for the fight at the weekend, particularly to fans arriving from McGregor's native Ireland.

Ken Solky, one of the leading experts in Vegas ticketing and President of LasVegasTickets.com told the Times that "those other tickets - like the block the MGM will release to its players - is money that's already in the bank, so I think they do have that live-gate record right now."

Various casinos block book tickets to gift to high rollers in order to entice them to Vegas for the fight and thus spend money in their hotels. Solky blamed the unusually large number of unsold tickets as being due to first-time scalpers attempting to profit from the fight.

"Some sought an opportunity with the sole purpose of making a buck. It didn't turn out their way" he told the LA Times. Tickets are currently on sale for around $1,500 on secondary markets, with many having been bought for much more than that.

The fight has drawn huge attention worldwide, with Mayweather putting his 49 fight unbeaten run on the line against the best that the world of mixed martial arts has to offer in Conor McGregor. McGregor is making his professional boxing debut, while Mayweather has been inactive since initially retiring from the sport in 2015.

American fighter Mayweather is a supreme defensive boxer and is a strong favourite to overcome his Irish opponent, who has knockout power but is untested in the boxing arena.
