iPhone XS Users Claim That Their Phone Won't Charge With The Screen Off

Picture the scenario - you've just forked over a load of dosh for a top-of-the line iPhone XS, you get it home, use it until it wants charging, but then it refuses to charge whilst the screen is in 'sleep' mode.

Well, if you actually went out and bought one, there's a decent chance that exactly this scenario is happening to you.

Users are reporting that their phone will only charge if the screen is woken up, that is to say, the screen is turned on.

So far, Apple has left users in the dark about the problems, but it reportedly could be that the problems have come from a security update that was installed very recently.

You see, a software update was recently released to try to stop hackers getting into people's iPhones via USB.

That meant that the charging port can be disabled after the phone has been idle for some time. It was intended that it would make it more difficult for hackers to gain access to people's phones - and by extension, their personal data.

However, they did accept at the time that it might cause some problems with charging, hence all of this fuss.

Apple's website contains a statement that reads: "Starting with iOS 11.4.1, if you use USB accessories with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or if you connect your device to a Mac or PC, you might need to unlock your device for it to recognise and use the accessory.

"Your accessory then remains connected, even if your device is subsequently locked.

"If you don't first unlock your password-protected iOS device - or you haven't unlocked and connected it to a USB accessory within the past hour - your iOS device won't communicate with the accessory or computer, and in some cases, it might not charge.

"You might also see an alert asking you to unlock your device to use accessories."

Get all that? Nope? Well, hopefully it'll be of some use to someone out there.

More useful, perhaps, is the news that if you go into 'Settings' and enable the USB Accessories feature in the Face ID and Passcode section you should be able to fix it. That's what a few people online have said.

Failing that, you could always try turning it off and back on again. That usually solves just about everything to do with technology, right?
