PayPal Is Giving Away £5 For Free To Some Lucky Users

If you're a PayPal customer, it's worth checking your emails to see if you've been sent a free fiver

PayPal users are being urged to check their emails as the company is handing out free fivers to some lucky customers.

The no-strings freebie is available until 11.59pm on 31 March or until all 20,000 pay-outs have been claimed - so if you've got an email, don't hang around.

Speaking to the Sun, PayPal didn't reveal who was eligible for the £5 offer but did say those who are will get an email inviting them to make the claim.

If you've got one, you'll simply need to click the link in the email and log into your account; the fiver will be available in your account around 72 hours later.

Once you've got it, you can withdraw it or keep it in your account to spend.

This isn't the first time the payment provider has given away free cash to its users - back in 2016 it also gave a number of lucky users a £5 to spend wherever they fancied.

Last year, PayPal announced a £12 'inactivity charge' for customers who don't use their accounts for a 12 month period.

The new rule, which was brought in last December, defined 'inactive' as accounts where the owner hasn't logged in or sent, received or withdrawn money.

The company will warn inactive users about the fee 60 days, 30 days and then seven days before they are charged.

It also won't apply to customers in Ireland, according to the terms and conditions of the penalty.

"We are establishing an inactivity fee for accounts that have been inactive for at least 12 consecutive months," a PayPal statement said.

"This provisions does not apply to PayPal users registered in Ireland and to personal accounts registered in Hungary."

There are three ways to avoid a potential charge.

Firstly, if you're not using your PayPal account at all, you can close the account by going to Settings and selecting Close your account at the bottom of the Account menu.

A second option is to keep the account open but transfer any money you have there into another account, as you won't be charged in future if your PayPal account has a zero balance.

For irregular PayPal users who still want to keep an account open and maintain a balance, you can simply set a calendar reminder on a certain date every year to ensure you're not charged the fee in future.
