People Are Complaining They Can't Use Face ID Because They're Wearing Face Masks

Face masks may help reduce the spread of coronavirus, but they also get in the way of facial recognition technology - who knew?

Face ID is a great example of modern technology's capabilities/people's laziness. Instead of tapping a four-digit number to access your smartphone, you just look at the screen. And abracadabra - all your apps and contacts are there in the palm of your hand, accessed by your face.

However, during a global pandemic where sensible people are wearing face masks to help stop the spread of the potentially deadly coronavirus Covid-19, some have realised that it's impossible to use Face ID while wearing a mask.

Obviously, it shouldn't take a degree to figure that out, because it seems pretty obvious that if half your face is covered by a cloth or covering of some sort then the software behind Face ID isn't going to work.

Apple

But it seems that a good number of people have been surprised by that fact, especially now that wearing face masks has become compulsory in shops and takeaways, and taking to social media - where else - to vent about the inconvenience of not being able to use Face ID.

Some people asked genuine questions about the predicament. One person on Twitter wrote: "Face ID does not work with a mask on. Am I allowed to take me mask off to open my phone in a shop. I'm not sure it's all very confusing."

Twitter

Others remembered simpler times, as another user asked: "iPhone owners who still have a home button and don't have to use Face ID with a mask won tbh."

Some pleaded for Apple to fix the issue - for example: "Hey Apple, can you please make an update where Face ID works with a mask on? Sincerely, the whole world."

Twitter

And some just expressed disappointment, such as the very succinct comment: "Wish my Face ID still worked with a face mask on."

Of course, there's always someone on hand to take the p*** when you're struggling. As one person wrote: "Face ID and a mask just don't mix," another person quote-tweeted them with the sarcastic response: "BREAKING: Face ID does not work when you don't show your full face."

Twitter

Another reply provided a handy health warning, stating: "Respirators don't work with Face ID either. Keep the mask on."

Some thought it was important that those complaining understood why it wasn't working, as one person helpfully responded with: "This is because the mask covers your face and Face ID needs to be able to see your face to identify you using your face. The more u know."

Twitter

Others decided that it was important to make fun of those complaining and point out that there are easy solutions available - another person concluded: "Saying you don't want to wear a mask because Face ID doesn't work with it on is the most pathetic thing I've heard in ages.

"It's not like other methods of unlocking your phones exist, sure it may take a few seconds longer, but is it really that bad? The answer is no, it is not."

The wonders of technology, eh?
