Microsoft Just Unveiled A New Xbox That’s Three Times More Powerful Than The PS4

Big news.

You know Microsoft is serious about chasing down PS4's almighty lead when it announces two brand new Xbox Ones in as many hours.

After news of the new slim and sleek white Xbox One reached our ears, Microsoft also lifted the lid at E3 on 'Project Scorpio', an updated Xbox One touted as the most powerful games console ever released.

Scorpio has been rumoured for some weeks now and will be significantly more powerful than the original machine and the new Xbox One S. Significantly, it'll also be three times as powerful as the current PlayStation 4 and will even outpace PS4 Neo - Sony's own soon-to-be-released upgraded console - by a comfortable distance.

Confused? Well, that's not surprising. Essentially, all you need to know is that both Microsoft and Sony are releasing more powerful versions of their existing consoles, though it appears Microsoft's update on the Xbox One will pack the most power by quite a margin.

Essentially, this means Xbox will be able to chase after two types of gamer at once, with the power-packing Scorpio, which is likely to cost significantly more than the Xbox One S when it launches, appealling to those who are far more interested in the technical side of consoles and gaming.

The one problem is that Project Scorpio isn't due until the run up to Christmas 2017.

So, is Scorpio worth getting excited about? Just a little.

Without wanting to get too techy, Scorpio's GPU - the little chip that powers the lovely swishy graphics you see on your TV screen - will offer 6 teraflops, which is a big fuck tonne measurement of a system's power. To put that figure in some context, that's four-and-a-half times more powerful than the current Xbox One, and three times more powerful than the PS4.

It's miles above the power the PS4 Neo will offer, and also outpaces even the most highly specced PCs on the market. In short, Project Scorpio is likely to be the most powerful games machine of any kind ever released.

Microsoft also revealed it'll be capable of 'high fidelity virtual reality', meaning it'll be able to take on PlayStation VR, too.

If you're worried that all the games you have bought for your current Xbox will go to waste, don't fret. Microsoft claims all Xbox One games, existing and forthcoming, will run on the Scorpio, they'll just look significantly better - so if you could ever find a way to make the GTA: San Andreas 'hot coffee' glitch available on the Scorpio, you're in for a high definition laugh.

Right now it's hard to say, given that we don't know the console's price point, full specifications, or even what it'll look like, whether you should purchase it. If you have to consider selling yourself on a dimly lit street corner just to save up for it, it's probably not worth it.
