We've written in the past about the crucial role pubs play in our lives, offering a vital meeting place to reconnect with loved ones or a space to unwind with a colleague after a particularly stressful day's work.

Over the past couple of months, we're sure we weren't alone in having a moment surrounded by friends in the pub, where we thought to ourselves: 'This is even better than I remembered'.

And, of course, thanks to Budweiser's Renew 100 initiative, some of those pubs literally are even better than when we last inhabited them, in that they are more sustainable than ever. If you don't already know about this incredible project, essentially Budweiser are partnering with 100 bars and pubs all over Ireland to install solar panels. This allows the pubs to be powered with 100% renewable electricity and patrons can sip away knowing their carbon footprint just got a little smaller.

The initiative kicked off with Opium in Dublin - one of the city's best known and iconic venues on Wexford Street - and since then a number of other iconic watering holes around Ireland have gotten in on the action. Among them is Jerry Flannery's, an institution of sorts in Limerick. Owned by the former Munster & Ireland International rugby player of the same name, this spot is a stalwart pub for following the rugby. When the match is over, you can look forward to great drinks, legendary bands and an unforgettable late bar - we're sure the people of Limerick are thrilled to have this place back open to its full capacity

"In the present day environment, sustainability has become a major factor in all long term business strategies," said pub owner and rugby legend Jerry Flannery. "The hospitality sector, in particular the pub trade, is one of the most established industries around and for this to continue we must all look at ways to reduce our environmental footprint."

"By championing the use of renewable electricity, brands like Budweiser help to drive awareness in society and facilitate individuals who wish to take a proactive approach to making better decisions in what they consume and the effect it has on the environment.

Also getting involved is Paris Texas in Kilkenny - a truly unique bar which promises a fusion of traditional American South West favourites with the sophistication of the New Orleans French Quarter. This award-winning bar also boasts a spacious outdoor area and great local DJs to help the party continue late into the night once your taste buds are satiated. A mainstay on the Kilkenny wining and dining scene since the '90s, literally the only thing that could have made this beloved venue any better would be some souped up sustainability creds.

"We are very aware of the need to reduce our carbon footprint as much and wherever possible, this is not always an easy task so when we were asked to participate in Budweiser's Renew 100 initiative we jumped at the chance," said the General Manager of Paris Texas, Padraic Rafter.

"Renew 100 is not just helping outlets to install solar panels, it's more than that. It is bringing environmental issues to the forefront of people's minds by putting their money where their mouth is! We applaud Budweiser for its efforts here in Paris Texas."

The coming weeks and months will see more and more bars around Ireland installed with solar panels - so the only thing left to do is to celebrate by stopping by for a deliciously cold pint of Budweiser.
