RTÉ Announces New Animated TV Show For Children Set In Leitrim

All eyes were on Co. Wicklow this summer as the small but charming village of Enniskerry played set to the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster sequel to Disney's Enchanted. Co-stars Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams had the whole country in a spin as they were spotted in various locations around Ireland, and the village itself saw record footfall as people flocked to visit the film set.

Now it seems it's Leitrim's turn to step into the limelight, albeit a little less literally. RTÉ has announced that it's picked up a brand-new animated children's TV show set in none other than the village of Drumsna, right along the River Shannon.

Paddles follows the title character, a polar bear cub who is accidentally delivered by the Stork to a frozen over River Shannon. Upon landing in Leitrim, the polar bear cub ends up being taken in and raised by a pack of Irish wolfhounds. Naturally, mayhem ensues and through the gang's adventures and this fish-out-of-water scenario, viewers will learn lessons about embracing being different and sticking out from the crowd - n'aww.

The series has been created by seven-time Emmy award winning husband and wife team Francis & Denise Fitzpatrick. Francis Fitzpatrick's own grandmother grew up in Drumsna in the 1890s and was apparently known to be a seanchaí (storyteller) so the creator feels a deep connection to the place.

The series features voice acting from a host of Irish talent including Dawn Bradfield (The Clinic, Moone Boy, Dublin Murders) and Suzi Power.

"We're delighted to be launching Paddles on the leading children's channel in Ireland. Although the setting will be familiar to many young Irish viewers, the tale of a young child trying to fit in an unusual environment is a universal one and we are confident this funny and charming show will quickly gain fans both in Ireland and in many other markets worldwide," commented Brendan Kelly, Head of Sales at FuturumKids.

"With its strong reputation, diverse range and especially its highly successful focus on children's animation, Cartoonito in the UK and RTÉ in Ireland are the ideal partners to develop our strategy for bringing Paddles to the wide broadcast and merchandising audience it deserves," he continued.

"We are looking forward enormously to working with the aforementioned broadcast partners."

Dermot Horan, director of Acquisitions & Co-Productions at RTÉ, added, "RTÉ is delighted to acquire a global series by the seven-time Emmy award-winning Jakers! Team - a series that is not only set in Ireland but that also showcases Irish talent."

The series will debut on RTÉjr later this month.
