Filming on season three of After Life has finally started today, and Ricky Gervais took to Twitter this morning to share a snap from the set of the hit Netflix series.

He posted a picture of himself holding a clapperboard, with the caption: "Action!"

Fans of the series are clearly - and very understandably - excited by the news.

Commenting on the post, one person said: "So pleased. Never has loss and grief been portrayed with such honesty, thank you."

Echoing these sentiments, another added: "This makes me incredibly happy. Not just the news that AL3 is filming, but your maniacal grin. There's something equally joyful and disturbing about it."

Ahead of today's shoot, Gervais posted another snap over the weekend.

Holding up the script, he joked: "I'd better learn my lines."

But we'll still have a while to wait before it hits our screens.

Earlier this year, the 59-year-old comedian said he was hoping to have the series ready to air by the end of the year.

Speaking in an interview on Lorraine back in February, he said: "Everything's going well, we film in April and May and then it takes a few months to edit and then it takes a couple of months to put into a 160 languages.

"So, I'm hoping [it will air] by the end of the year."

After Life follows Tony (played by Gervais), a man who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his wife, while also attempting to improve his relationships with the other people in his life.

The dark comedy struck a chord with people, however so did the other themes of mental health and what to do when someone close to you dies too soon.

The show has been praised for tackling some big and often difficult ideas while also remaining absolutely hilarious.

Sadly though, he confirmed that the upcoming series will be its last.

He added: "I've never done a third series of anything, but it felt right, and I fell in love with the characters, and I think this should be it."

Expanding on this, Gervais also told The Sun that his role was akin to that of a conductor.

He said: "I've already made my mind up - there just won't be a fourth.

"You never say never but you put those things out there to make you remember because it's tempting, it's very tempting.

"The audience think they want another one but they don't know, they're not sure, so you've got to be careful."
