Cillian Murphy says he would be up for starring in a third 28 Days Later movie.

The Peaky Blinders star made his name as the emaciated and confused Jim, who wakes up in an abandoned hospital to find the world is not quite as he knew it in the 2002 zombie movie.

With the Rage virus having infected most of society, he is left alone to fend off the bloodthirsty predators creeping in the shadows.

But almost two decades on from its release, Murphy said he loved making it and wouldn't say no if the opportunity came up again.

Speaking to CinePOP about the idea, the 45-year-old said: "I would never say never. I loved making that movie. It was a long time ago. It was almost 20 years ago. But sure!"

The film was followed five years later by sequel 28 Weeks Later, which starred Robert Carlyle.

But since then, it's all been a bit quiet with regards to a third instalment.

The latest murmurings came a couple of years ago, when director Danny Boyle said he had been in discussions to bring the franchise back to the big screen.

Talking about the possibility of him returning for another crack of the whip, Boyle told the Independent that he and screenwriter Alex Garland - who wrote the first film - were discussing the possibility.

He said: "Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part. It's properly good."

He continued: "The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn't reference any of that. It doesn't feel stale at all.

"He's concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it's stood in abeyance really, but it's a you-never-know."

In an 2015 interview with IGN, Garland said it would most probably be set a couple of years after the second film.

But he hinted there could even be scope for a couple more films in the series.

"We've just started talking about it seriously," said the writer.

"We've got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility.

"It's complicated. There's a whole bunch of reasons why it's complicated, which are boring so I won't go into, but there's a possibility."

He added: "It's more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years. 28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the p**s."
