Damien Lewis was spotted on the set of his new film, Run This Town, in Toronto on Monday - and he looked... well, like an entirely different man.

The Billions star has undergone a pretty drastic transformation to play Toronto's former mayor, Rob Ford, who died in 2016.

Ford, who was mayor of Toronto from 2010 to 2014, was a pretty controversial figure during his career... hence, why there's now a film about him, really.

The movie will focus on the last year of his mayoral term, which was laced with scandal and ultimately built up to the moment he was caught on video smoking crack. He subsequently took leave from office to go to rehab.

To get into the role of the disgraced former mayor, Lewis had to have a complete overhaul of his look, having been recently photographed wearing heavy make-up and prosthetics as he walks down the street.

He looks absolutely unrecognisable, doesn't he?

With the bulging tum and thinning blonde hair, it's a huge departure from the roles we've previously seen 47-year-old Lewis in - which, along with his turn in Billions, include Brody in Homeland and Major Richard Winters in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

Details of the Run This Town are currently under wraps, but TMZ reports that those involved with the movie have referred to it as 'historical fiction', instead of a biopic.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the plot follows a journalist (played by Ben Platt) who attempts to expose a scandal involving Ford, as the mayor's assistants (Nina Dobrev and Mena Massoud), try their best to handle him and keep the story suppressed. Other cast members include Scott Speedman and Jennifer Ehle.

The film is said to be loosely based on the exposé Crazy Town: The Rob Ford Story, which was written by journalist Robyn Doolittle, who exposed some of the scandals involving the former Canadian official.

However, it seems she's has taken issue with the fact the film has cast Ben in the leading role as a journalist, rather than a woman.

Robyn tweeted: "I'm glad they're rewriting the fact that it was a female reporter who investigated Rob Ford. Why have a woman be a lead character when a man could do it? Ammaright?"

Ben hit back, tweeting: "I have the utmost respect for your accomplishments - I play a totally fictionalised character, an entitled, incapable entry-level reporter (my boss is played by Jennifer Ehle) at a fictional competing newspaper.

"The film alludes to the successful reporting from the Toronto Star."
