Warning: Spoilers Ahead

With the makers of Stranger Things and The End of the F***ing World at the helm, I Am Not Okay With This was always going to be a hit.

But while most have loved the interesting take on the coming-of-age story, it's the season finale that has really got fans talking - ya know, because someone's head blows up.

Yep, in a super gory ending, a school dance turns into a veritable bloodbath when jock Brad's skull explodes, covering the series main protagonist, Syd, from head to toe. Head to toe. Christ on a bike, it's grim.

For those of you who don't know, the show follows a teenage girl as she navigates the trials and tribulations of high school, all while dealing with the complexities of her family, her budding sexuality, and mysterious superpowers just beginning to awaken deep within her. Hence the head explosion.

And those who have already binged the series were left shaken by its ending.

Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: "I FINISHED I Am Not Okay With This AND THE ENDING IS SO DRAMATIC AHHHH IM CRYING I WAS IN SO MUCH SHOCK."

A second viewer commented: "I Am Not Okay With This ending blew me away."

"I am not okay with I Am Not Okay With This ending. I'm shook", said a third.

While another added: "I Am Not Okay With This ending got me f***ed up."

The finale left some making the point that it's a clear homage to Stephen King's horror classic, Carrie. A comparison the show's makers have addressed and said is purely coincidental.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the series finale, Shawn Levy, who worked on Stranger Things, said: There are certain movies or references that come up as we're developing the script, but not once in all my years on Stranger Things and not once during I Am Not Okay With This do we as filmmakers say, 'Now we're going to do this shot like that one time in that movie.

"I know people will find this hard to believe, but these influences are very strong but they're more latent and unconscious than declared."

With fellow creator Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) agreeing: "It was completely on accident, strangely. We came to the image very early when talking about, if she's not going to explode her own head, which she does in the comic, what are the opportunities for what we can do with Syd? What is the iconography of that conclusion?

"We came up with this, we liked the aesthetic, and then it suddenly dawned on me once we started that process, it's a very cool image but it's very similar to Carrie."

He added: "It's pig's blood and it's the prom. The similarities are there, but it was never a reference for the show."

I Am Not Okay With This is available to watch on Netflix now.
