Friends Creator Says They Won't Be Making Any New Episodes

David Crane told LADbible the recent cast reunion was a 'surprise' to him as well

The creator of Friends says he won't be bringing the sitcom back - despite the recent reunion between cast members.

David Crane, who devised and wrote much of Friends with Marta Kaufman, told LADbible the reunion was a 'total surprise' to him - and he only found out they'd got together when he saw Jennifer Aniston's Instagram post.

He said: "I knew nothing about it. I got to enjoy the surprise the same way as everyone else. Seeing them together was great though and if one of my friends is able to break the internet, then that's pretty cool too."

Crane said he wouldn't be getting together with the six famous Friends for any new episodes though.

He said: "I don't think you want to see those characters again. We don't need to see where they are, pushing their kids around in middle age. Maybe we can imagine it, but I don't want to write that.

"That show is so specific to the experience of being in your 20s, I don't think there's anywhere to take them that would do the show any favours. So as much as I love Friends and will always be proud of it, I've rolled it up into a ball and put a pin in it."

Crane also said he was 'surprised and excited' that a whole new generations of twentysomethings had become fans of the show more than 25 years after it first aired - despite the fact it lacks many of the references of modern life.

He said: "There's no social media in Friends, nobody is on their devices. The internet was in its infancy. But the show is all about personal relationships and dealing with becoming adults and so I think that's the appeal. The show was never really about the 90s."

Crane was in London to visit Comedy Central's FriendsFestive, the live interactive exhibition with sets recreated from the show.

He said: "Going back to some of those sets took me right back to the early days. The apartment, Central Perk. It was like being a kid again."

The exhibition also allows fans to recreate some classic scenes - but he said the famous 'pivot' scene, recently voted the best Friends moment of all time, wasn't necessarily the one that stood out for him.

He said: "People will normally go for the jokes, but I gravitate towards the emotional scenes like births and weddings. So Phoebe saying goodbye to the triplets, them leaving the flat for the last time, that sort of stuff."

Crane also said he was a fan of British TV, especially Fleabag. He said: "I love it. I've tried to watch Little Britain though and I just don't get it. I think it's too British for us Americans.

"My favourite show of all though is Come Dine With Me. I love it. Honestly, we sit for hours watching it whenever we visit the UK. It always seems to be on. A bit like Friends I suppose!"

FriendsFestive runs in London until 21 December
