Luther Creator Confirms Film Is In The Works

Luther Creator Confirms Film Is In The Works

'More Luther' is on the way in the form of a film, its creator has confirmed.

Neil Cross has revealed that there are plans to make a spin-off movie it's just a question of why and how.

Speaking to Radio Times, he kept his cards close to his chest but admitted that progress was being made.

Cross told the publication: "Ask Idris! We are - I don't know what I'm allowed to say, which is an answer in of itself! Words are my job and I've lost them all.

These comments come after years of speculation surrounding a possible movie.

Earlier this year, the show's star, Idris Elba, said it's something that he has wanted for a long time and believes it could be special.

He said: "I've maintained that I'd like to see [Luther] come to a film. That's what I think we're headed towards, is a film. I'm looking forward to making that happen... It is happening!

"With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther."

And way back in 2018, the actor said Cross was working hard to get the project off the ground.

"We are really advancing on getting a movie version up on the screen," he said.

"Neil is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up.

"It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther... essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well."

But while it looks like a film will certainly be made at some point, it's still a way off just yet.

Cross has most recently been working on ITV thriller The Sister, which stars Russell Tovey and is based on Cross' book Burial.

Discussing the main character, Nathan, Cross said: "I mean probably it's the closest I've come to autobiography on the page or on the screen. I'd certainly make a better killer than I would a police officer [like Luther]."

The Sister premieres on 26 October.
